Sembaruthi (transl. Hibiscus) is a Tamil-language drama on Zee Tamil starring Karthik Raj, Shabana Shajahan and Priya Raman. It is a remake of Muddha Mandaram, a serial in Zee Telugu.^[1] It is currently airing every Monday to Saturday during prime time.

The story about a rich, strong-willed and stubborn woman, Akhilandeshwari (Priya Raman) and her elder son Aadhithya (Aadhi) Karthik Raj intense love story with Parvathi (Sabana Shajahan), a servant working as a cook and how issues spiral out of control to affect their relationship. And also his brother Arun (VJ Kadir) and his wife Aishwariya (Ice) (Janani Ashok kumar) supports them. Their marriage would be the plot of the story and how the pair faces various turmoils occurring in the form of Vanaja (Lakshmi) and her cronies forms the rest of the story.

She is also in love with Aadithya whom she marries later and Become Aadhi's wife.
• Priya Raman as 'Aadhikadavur' Akhilandeshwari / Akhila ^[3]
  • A rich, strong willed and stubborn woman, Akhilandeshwari is one who expects perfection in everything. She is the mother of Aadhi and Arun, and Mother-in-law of Aishwariya and Parvathi and wife of Purushortaman. She is the de facto head of the house. She is unaware of her son's love and eventual marriage to Parvathy. Although stubborn, she can be caring at times and is good at heart. Atlast She comes to know about Aadhi's Marriage to parvathy.

• VJ Kathir as 'Aadhikadavur'Arun Purushortaman:
  • The enthusiastic younger son of Akhilandeshwari and Purusothaman and Caring and Lovable Husband of Aishwariya. He is a lively man who is in support of his brother's love. At initial stage Arun was a playboy but, Arun is married to Aishwarya, whom he despised initially. Now they are closer in life.
• Lakshmi as Vanaja (Main Antagonist)
  • She is co-Sister of the Akilandeshwari. She is evil and Main Antagonist, cunning and always crafts plans to split the family and ruin Parvathy's reputation. She wants to take revenge against Akhiladeshwari, Purushothaman, Aadhi, Arun, Aishwariya and Parvathi. She is joint with Nandhini and plotting against them.
• Sanjay → Dhashwanth as Ganesha:
  • Parvathi's younger brother, Sundaram's Son. He helps her sister in her love. He want to become a Collector and he always loves her sister and his father.
• 'Valli' Mounika as Nandhini (Antagonist)
  • Adithya's ex-fiancée. Nandhini is a crafty woman who seeks to revenge on Akhilandeshwari's family for humiliating her. She belongs to the Nagapuri Vamsam (Enemy of Adhikadavur Family). She joins hands with Vanaja to take revenge against them.
• Singapore Deepan as Vadivelu @ Vadivu:
  • Relative of Vanaja. Comic and good hearted person who dislikes Vanaja and supports a Aadhi and Parvathy.

New actress Shabana was Selected to Portray the lead role (Heroine) as Parvathi. Office serial Fame Karthik Raj landed in lead role (Hero) as Adhitya in the Show. This is his comeback serial, after 2 years. Tamil Film actress and film producer Priya Raman was selected as one of the leads as Akhilandeshwari. VJ Kathir of Dance Jodi Dance was selected for supporting role as Arun. Narasimha Raju was selected for a supporting role. Janani Ashok Kumar (Mappillai) fame, was selected to play Aishwarya, an important character in the story. Dhashwanth (Kalvi, Kuttiz, Parameshwari Vanthal, Unaka Enakaa Serial Fame) Best child artist, was selected to play Ganesh (Parvathi's brother).

Title[edit]

This title was taken from a 1992 Chembaruthi feature film starring Prashanth Thiagarajan, Bhanumathi and Roja. The English meaning of this title is Hibiscus.

Reception and impact[edit]

This show created a history in Tamil television by becoming the first non Sun TV show to top the TRP charts.^[6] The show had marked history being dominating the ratings chart and maintaining its No. 1 position in Tamil Nadu for 24 weeks (from Barc Week 46,2018 to Week 21,2019 except on Week 49 '18,Week 3 '19, Week 13 '19 & Week 18 '19).^[7]

Currently, it is giving a tough competition to Nayagi of Sun TV Roja with a minor change in its position in ratings.^[8]

On August 2019, Zee Tamil held a grand event to celebrate the success of Sembaruthi.^[7]

Remakes[edit]

The show is remade into Malayalam under the title Chembarathi which is being aired on Zee Keralam and also as Paaru on Zee Kannada.^[9][10]
