Evanukku Engeyo Matcham Irukku (English: He has a mole somewhere) is a 2018 Indian Tamil adult comedy film directed by Mukesh and produced by Sharmiela Mandre. The film stars Vimal and Ashna Zaveri in the lead roles, with Singampuli, Anandaraj, Poorna, and Mansoor Ali Khan in supporting roles. The music was composed by Natarajan Sankaran with cinematography by Gopi Jagadeeswaran and editing by P. Dinesh. A remake of the Telugu film Guntur Talkies (2016), the film was released on 7 December 2018 to mixed reviews and become an average grosser.^[1][2]

Plot[edit]

Hari (Vimal) and Giri (Singampuli) are colleagues who work together in a pharmacy. In the night, they become robbers but steal only petty things. However, they land in trouble by going beyond their limits. Soon, both partners in crime gets chased by a cop named SI Geetha (Poorna), a gangster named Annachi (Anandaraj), and a horny NRI (Miya Rai) who wants Hari. Above all, the family of Hari's lover Surekha (Ashna Zaveri) also wants to wallop him. The rest of the film is all about how both Hari and Giri come out of all the trouble.

Production[edit]

A remake of the Telugu adult crime comedy Guntur Talkies (2016), the film was picked up by Kannada actress Sharmiela Mandre, who wanted to produce the film as a display of gratitude for director Mukesh, who had introduced her as an actress with Sajni (2007).^[3]Vimal and Ashna Zaveri were signed on to play lead characters, with the story edited to cater it to the Tamil audiences.^[4] The team originally considered Rashmi Gautam, who was part of the original, for a role but she was ultimately left out.^[5]Poorna was also cast in the film as a police officer.

The film was partially shot in London during mid-2018, where scenes featuring Vimal, Ashna and British-Punjabi actress Mahi Sarna were shot. The rest of the film was shot in Chennai and Theni.^[6][7]

Critical reception[edit]

Times of India rated 2 out of 5 '.being an unabashed adult comedy. The adult part of it, [.] is problematic… [.] but because of the sloppy writing.'^[9]Cinema Express called it 'offensive, disastrous attempt at an adult comedy'.^[10]

Ivanukku Engaiyo Macham Irukku Movie Review: Like ‘Hara Hara Mahadevaki’ and ‘Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuthu’, ‘Ivanukku Engaiyo Macham Irukku’ is a unabashed about being an unabashed adult comedy. The adult part of it, as in the other two films, is problematic… Not out of misplaced notions of morality (which is what most people might feel) but because of the sloppy writing. The director, AR Mukesh, seems to believe that skin show and horny female characters are by themselves will result in an adult comedy. In fact, much of the first half is along these lines. We get the story of Hari (Vemal) and Giri (Singampuli), co-workers at a pharmacy who moonlight as robbers. Their modus operandi is actually interesting – they do not steal money but only smaller items, like talcum powders, soap boxes and mosquito bats, which they later sell for a small amount. This keeps them out of trouble from the cops.

We get their backstories… Giri’s wife has run away with another man; Hari, who worked as a waiter in a London pub, had fled from the country following sexual harassment from an insatiable, horny woman (Miya Rai Leone, who, apparently, is related to Sunny Leone). And one night, the two, unbeknownst to the other, cross their own lines by stealing cash. They manage to flee, but soon, trouble begins.

And this is when the film shows signs of being a comedy, of the madcap kind that Sundar C is famous for. A cop (Mansoor Ali Khan) to whom the money belongs sends his subordinate (Poorna) to catch them; a local gangster (Anandraj) is after a medicine box that contains drugs; the family of Hari’s lover, Surekha (Ashna Zaveri) wants to murder him for sleeping with their daughter; and the British woman from London wants Hari back!

Mukesh doesn’t entirely exploit this premise for non-stop laughs, but there are quite a few ones that are really funny. Unlike a lazy effort like ‘Hara Hara Mahadevaki’, which left it to its actors and never tries to be funny, this provides its actors with material that they can work with. And actors like Anandraj (who makes even predictable lines funny), Singampuli (not grating for a change) and Vemal (who is game enough to realise that the film’s portrayal of him as a stud is comedy in itself) grab this opportunity and make this film passable.
